Healing From a Troubled Past
The dish flies across the room, shattering, fragments scatter. She leans forward into the space of hot air around you, making the point concrete in anger. Another day, they quarrel over the time, the race for readiness or a chance to be at the sink, or the pile of clutter. It’s chaos of words, conflict and strife, daily making what should be a home, simply a house, discouraging your heart.
And then they go to church, sitting calmly in the rows.
And your young self tries to assimilate the differences. Is God true? Then why is there such animosity over…little things. It could be so different.
Friend, the enemy wants you to rehearse the hurt and he says, “See, God has left you behind in the pain of your past; God would not have allowed all that if He was truly good!” He wants you to look at the cleanliness on the outside of the dish and cup the filth on the inside, there now shattered on the floor, and to find a reason to be bitter at God. But he is lying to you.
Many young people look at their fragmented upbringing and turn away from God, and yet it should draw you fervently towards Him! You see, the ugliness of that path you witnessed is exactly what happens when you reject the fruit of the Spirit in your life. Certainly, there are many who have much to grieve, but allowing sadness to become hard-heartedness towards God is not the answer to a blessed life. Instead of allowing it to make you bitter, let it be what drives you to become better. Run into the freedom of Christ and allow the Holy Spirit to strengthen you into someone different. God desires that our lives show others His attributes of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. It is God’s grace that changes our hearts and allows us to forgive, heal, and love for God’s glory. Allow Him to take the pain and replace it with purpose. Seek Him and discover that all things work together for good, forgetting what is behind, and pressing on towards the prize that God has called us to in Christ Jesus.
